President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has urged the Maldivian people to cast their ballots for candidates of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the upcoming Local Council Elections.

The president, alongside Parliament Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed, inaugurated the event to put up posters as part of the ruling party’s campaign activities for the council elections, slated for 4 April.

The event kicked off after an activity to paint the “Rahvehi Fathis” logo used by the party for this election, at the party’s main campaign site.

Speaking to media after the inauguration, Solih stated that the government is in dire need of cooperation from local councils in order to kick-start proceed with important schemes and development projects.

As such, he shed light on the importance of electing councilors who will support and extend a hand in implementing the government policies and its agenda. He added that MDP candidates are “ready” to implement the government’s development agenda.

True to his word, MDP has brought several amendments to the Decentralization Act after coming into power and winning super majority during the Parliamentary Elections of 2019.

President Solih stated that councils have a major responsibility in the government’s work to implement policies. Under the recently amended Decentralization Act, councils have been empowered and have been vested major financial power to make decisions regarding both economic and social issues as well as the plots of land under their jurisdiction.

In addition, the president asserted that the odds of winning the majority in the upcoming council elections are in MDP’s favor, owing to the party’s tremendous win in the past elections, and since he believes that the people are still with the main ruling party.

Speaking at the event, Speaker Nasheed also expressed his assurance that the main ruling party will win by a large margin.
