The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed that there are 269,562 eligible voters for the upcoming Local Council Elections and women’s development committee elections.

On Thursday, an agreement of cooperation was signed between ECM and the Civil Service Commission, where Vice President Ahmed Akram signed on behalf of ECM and President, Dr. Ali Shameem signed on behalf of the Civil Service Commission.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Akram stated that 269,562 individuals are eligible to cast their votes during the elections and about 538 – 560 ballot boxes will be placed.

We require about 6,500 officials to maintain the ballot boxes throughout the elections. They will be active in providing the results and preparing about 50,000 result sheets. About 7,000 officials will be active throughout the election day alone”
Akram

Akram went on to reveal that they have made an announcement for interested individuals to apply as officials and the work to seek officials will be expanded along with the efforts from the Civil Service Commission.

169 ballot boxes will be placed in capital city Malé, and it is most difficult to seek officials to be active in the capital. Seeking out officials for polling stations in resorts has never been difficult”
Akram

The Local Council Elections, slated for 4 April, is the first of its kind to be held since amendments were brought to the decentralization act, the last one was held during February 2011. ECM assures the public that this year’s elections are expected to be different in every way.
