Following the earthquake that tore through eastern Turkey the past weekend, Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has sent a message of condolence to his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

FM Shahid expressed grief in having heard of the news of the catastrophic earthquake that rocked Elâzığ Province, Turkey on Friday that took several lives and injured many, leaving several properties and infrastructure crumbled in its wake.

The minister extended sympathies to the government and people of Turkey on behalf of the government and people of Maldives following the calamity.

Nearly 35 people were killed, over 1,600 injured and close to 650 buildings incurred heavy damages after the earthquake of a magnitude of 6.7 tore through eastern Turkey which was followed by 400 aftershocks, reported Reuters.

Despite most of the earthquake having struck eastern Turkey, Reuters cited the United States Geological Survey having a record of reports from individuals who felt tremors from southern Georgia, western Iran and northern Israel as well.
