Authorities have launched an investigation into an incident of physical assault by a police officer on a woman participating in a mob outside Hulhumale' flat 108.
Reports of a 2-year-old raped by two generations of her family's male patriarchs took the country by storm on Thursday, leading to a mob rallying outside Hulhumale' flat 108, where they believed her father was hiding. A video depicting a woman, who was one of the protesters, allegedly beaten by a police officer has begun circulating on social media. The video shows the middle-aged woman with bleeding injuries on her face.
According to a tweet by the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, the incident has come to the attention of the authorities. The Commissioner further stated that he personally spoke to a family member of the victim with a team from the Professional Standards section of Maldives Police Service (MPS), adding that an investigation into the matter has been launched.
As such, authorities revealed that 27 people were arrested during the rally outside Hulhumale' flat 108 with 19 people still under police custody.
