ECM denies tampering with political parties' registry

ECM asserted that they stick by the procedures when omitting and registering members to parties

According to the latest political parties’ registry released by the commission, the main ruling party comprises of 54,101 members

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has refuted claims of having tampered with the registry of political parties.

The commission took to Twitter on Sunday, writing that they stick by the procedures and follow the set regulations when registering individuals to political parties or even when omitting names from party registries.

This tweet comes in response to criticism from Former Secretary General of opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and current MP for Nilandhoo constituency Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, former MP for Dhidhdhoo constituency Abdul Latheef and a few more former parliamentarians who expressed concern over their names being registered under main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Some of them have shared screenshots of results that came up when they typed in their identity numbers on MDP’s website, showing their personal details and that they are registered under the party.

This indicates that MDP has grabbed database from Department of National Registration”
Dr. Abdulla Khaleel

According to the latest political parties’ registry released by the commission, the main ruling party comprises of 54,101 members and PPM has 36,073 registered members while coalition party Jumhooree Party comes third with 11,072 members.
