A significant increase has been recorded in the tourist arrivals to the Maldives from the neighbouring country of India.
Statistics show that a total of 145،047 (one hundred and forty-five thousand and forty-seven) tourists have arrived in the Maldives this year compared whereas 90،474 (ninety thousand, four hundred and forty-seven) Indian tourists were recorded last year.
Despite the growth of the Indian market, the neighbouring country comes second with the most number of tourists arriving from China. As such, a total of 267،875 (two hundred sixty-seven thousand eight hundred and seventy-five) Chinese tourists arrived this year with 283،116 (two hundred eighty-three thousand one hundred sixteen) Chinese tourists recorded last year.
Statistics further show that the continent with the largest number of tourist arrivals to the country are from Europe. A total of 740،093 (seven hundred and forty thousand and ninety-three) European tourists visited the country with the top four countries being Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and Russia.
An overall look at the tourist arrivals for this year shows a significant increase compared to 2018. The latest stats show that more than 1.5 million tourists visited the Maldives by November 2019. This is a 14.9% increase compared to 2018.
