There are currently a total of 59 Maldivians stranded in Syria.

Maldivian jihadists who have become refugees in Syria will be brought back to the country with the help of foreign governments and rehabilitated back into society, says Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has previously stated during a press conference that work is underway to bring back the Maldivian refugees in Syria. Further, the president declared that these individuals will be rehabilitated in a designated center with the help of foreign countries.

As such, while speaking at ‘Viavathi Raajje’ councilor conference held at Crossroads Maldives, Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed disclosed that there are currently a total of 59 Maldivians stranded in Syria.

Noting that 91% of these refugees are women and children, Hameed stated that only four men are in a state to be brought back to the country.

As the government has determined to bring the refugees back to the country, work is ongoing to establish a specialized center to rehabilitate them in Maafushi island of Kaafu atoll. In the upcoming 6 months or so, they will be brought back to the country with the help of foreign governments. With the recent amendments to the terrorism act, a rehabilitation mechanism will be established.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has previously announced that the rehabilitation center will be constructed by Police Welfare Corporation (PolCo) for MVR49 million.
