Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched an investigation into a sexual assault involving a police officer.
According to the authorities, a report of a fight breaking out due to the sexual assault of an 18-year-old boy by a 42-year-old man was filed on Sunday night at around 22:50pm.
MPS revealed that the perpetrator was a police officer and that the man was arrested and taken into custody the same night.
He has since been released after being presented in court for remand hearing on Monday. He is to have been released with conditions.
While a criminal investigation is currently ongoing, the Professional Standards Command of the MPS is also conducting a disciplinary inquiry after suspending the individual in question.
