Strategic Action Plan
Teachers to be given training against religious radicalization

The government's newly launched action plan includes training teachers against religious radicalization.

The government's newly launched action plan includes training teachers against religious radicalization.

President Solih revealed, during a ceremony held on Wednesday night, the 5 main targets under the government's new Strategic Action Plan (SAP) - Blue economy, Caring state, Dignified families, Jazeera dhiriulhun and Good governance.

The initiative to train teachers against extremism falls under the subsector of the SAP to develop religious unity in the Maldives and the conservation of Islam. Further measures include no less than 80% of mosques being air-conditioned using renewable energy, increasing the number of Imams with degree-level qualifications by 40% compared to 2018, and establishing at least one House of Wisdom (Bayt-Al-Hikma) Public Academy and Intellectual Centre.

The plan prioritizes the promotion and protection of the Islamic faith as the Maldives is a democratic sovereign based and founded on Islamic ideology and principles. Hence, the SAP also contains measures such as consolidating the Islamic faith through awareness, education, and research. Furthermore, there are plans to improve capacity building and the relevant infrastructure facilities, up-scaling halal certification mechanisms, strengthening zakat management and boosting the delivery of services for Hajj and Umrah.

In addition to the initiative to train teachers against religious radicalization, the government has taken steps against religious terrorism and rectified the legislature regarding terrorism. The bill is yet to be passed by the president.
