President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has held discussions on preventive measures and a course of action with his Cabinet of Ministers, following Friday night's fire.

These discussions were held during an emergency meeting held late Friday, where relief efforts were discussed in assistance with relevant authorities.

As such, the Ministry of Finance is to oversee the provision of financial assistance to affected families, which total about 200 individuals who are being provided temporary shelter in local schools.

Further, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other relevant institutions are to be involved in the provision of shelter for those affected.

Preventive measures for such tragic incidents discussed include relocating warehouses that store hazardous chemicals, away from residential areas.

The fire reported on Friday evening, destroyed several homes in Henveiru ward of the capital and was extinguished after hours, late Friday night.

Several people were rushed to local hospitals over smoke inhalation, and a woman trapped inside her apartment was found dead after the fire was extinguished.
