Bar Council will be holding an election on September 28 to elect a new executive committee member.

The decision was made after the resignation of Bar Council executive committee member Aisha Shujoon Mohamed, who has recently been made a Supreme Court judge.

Elections Commission stated that it is now working to implement procedures to hold the election at the date chosen by the Bar Council.

Bar Council’s executive committee consists of the President, Vice President, Attorney General, and six members. Except for the Attorney General, all the committee members were elected through votes from lawyers in the Maldives.

The election to appoint members to the Bar Council executive committee was held in July, after the ratification of the Legal Profession Act.

The Bar Council is an independent association of lawyers tasked with fulfilling the responsibilities of the Legal Profession Act, including regulating the licenses granted to practice law in the Maldives and to oversee and penalize workers in the legal sector.
