Nullifying the 2013 presidential election results is one of the Supreme Court’s biggest acts of corruption, says North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy.

He said this during the parliamentary debate on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC)’s report highlighting 17 of Supreme Court’s decisions that had violated the Constitutions and laws.

Speaking in parliament, MP Fahmy accused the Supreme Court of nullifying the people’s vote for political reasons or for personal gain.

MP Fahmy also proposed to include in the report that the Supreme Court had stopped the discussion between lawyers and citizens on reforming the court and also pursued criminal charges on anyone who criticized the court, adding that he was also a victim.

He also said that the Supreme Court had violated Islamic and national laws by ignoring Dr. Afrasheem Ali’s family’s request to not pursue the death sentence for Afrasheem’s murderer Hussain Humaam.

Also during the debate, Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef proposed to include in the report that the Supreme Court’s first decision that violated the Constitution was in 2008, when the temporary Supreme Court established after the implementation of the new Constitution had acted unlawfully. He detailed that, during that time, Abdulla Saeed had made decisions and sent letters in the name of the Chief Justice.
