President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Abdul Maaniu Hussain to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), as the lawyers’ representative.

President Solih presented the letter of appointment at a ceremony held on Wednesday at the President’s Office.

Afterwards, Maaniu took his oath of office in front Supreme Court Justice Ahmed Areef.

He was elected as the lawyers’ representative at the commission in a vote held on Saturday.

While five candidates competed, Maaniu won with 199 votes; Ali Rasheed received 124 votes while Mariyam Haneefa -the only female candidate- received 27 votes, former Information Commissioner Jamal Abubakur received 37 votes and Ahmed Rasheed getting got nine.

While 1,487 lawyers registered to vote in the election, only 404 cast their ballots; boxes were placed in Male’ and Addu City.

JSC’s seat reserved for the lawyers’ representative had been occupied by Latheefa Gasim, but she was dismissed following the ratification of the Legal Profession Act on June 27.
