Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested a “high-profile drug trafficker.”
Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed announced this via Twitter on Tuesday, praising officers of the Drug Enforcement Department (DED), Drug Intelligence and the Upper-North Division for a job well done.
Commissioner Hameed said that a total of 6.023 kgs of narcotic drugs were seized in the operation, which led to the arrest of the high-profile drug trafficker on Tuesday. No other details were provided.
He added that the operation to apprehend the particular suspect began “seven days ago.”
While authorities continue to confiscate a large number of narcotics through different operations across the country, police recently destroyed 416.9 kgs of drugs confiscated during 3,165 different operations from January 2014 to June 2019.
While drugs confiscated from 2009 to 2014 are still in its possession, police will destroy these after conducting an audit.
Hameed said that drugs confiscated during operations will be destroyed within a month after investigations conclude, from now on; except for the bare minimum required by the law.
