Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has revealed that it is yet to receive millions owed for its services.
WAMCO handles the waste management operations for Malé region.
The company’s Chief Operating Officer Adam Mohamed said that it has not received over 83 million, for waste collection and disposal services.
Noting that this is being monitored every week, Adam revealed that it has not received a total of MVR 36,670,733 for waste collection services and MVR 46,453,453 for waste disposal services.
Further noting that the Ministry of Environment is to establish a waste management policy, Adam said that it is the ministry that has to carry out all related work in the matter.
He also accused the ministry of not providing enough support for WAMCO’s operations.
Adam said that the company is currently only able to collect and dispose waste, adding that it does not have the proper machinery to manage waste.
While the Waste Management Corporation Limited was initially formed in 2009, the corporation officially started operations in January 2016.
Officials of the corporation was summoned to the parliament’s committee on state owned enterprises on Tuesday, where its financial head Mohamed Igbal revealed that the company has been working at a loss since the very beginning.
