Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has thanked the nations that have shown support to Maldives’ re-inclusion into the Commonwealth.

Minister Shahid thanked the nations in a tweet on Thursday.

In the tweet, he thanked India, Bangladesh, Canada, Pakistan, Rwanda and Sri Lanka for “the strong show of support at Commonwealth Foreign Ministers meeting in London for Maldives being fast tracked back into the Commonwealth.”

At the meeting, Sri Lanka stated that Maldives be given the opportunity to be fast tracked into the Commonwealth just as Gambia had been and requested that the island nation be given membership to participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

At a recent press conference, the Australian Ambassador also called on the Commonwealth to make Maldives a member.

A Commonwealth team has made an assessment of the Maldives and Minister Shahid has given the required documents to Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland.
