Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) will not disburse party membership forms, revealed commission member Ahmed Akram.

Also the spokesperson at the commission, Akram revealed that the hearings conducted by the Information Commission office were carried out following complaints submitted at the commission regarding political party membership forms.

Stating that political parties will manage their membership forms, Akram stated that it is not under the commission’s mandate to reveal their details to the public.

Two individuals had sought from the EC to reveal details regarding membership forms to join Maldives Third-Way Democrats, (MTD).

A previous case saw hearings scheduled against EC for not revealing details regarding a petition. However, Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions had carried out investigations into the case, following which the Information Commissioner withdrew the trial.
