Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided to change its regulations and hold primaries to choose election nominees, "after seeing things up close."
Leader Qasim Ibrahim announced this at an event held at JP headquarters on Tuesday night, adding that the purpose of this is to hold party activities “at a national level.”
The decision was reached at the last council meeting, and covers all elections including presidential, parliamentary and local council.
He added that this is in accordance with democratic principles.
“It is clear that these are important when following democratic principles, unlike our previous view, [especially] after seeing [the results of] this up close. So, we also want to bring important changes to our party”Qasim Ibrahim
The Maamigilli constituency MP further stated that other steps will be taken to improve the party’s operations.
JP is also planning to conduct a nation-wide tour before the end of the year, on a membership drive.
While JP is to alter its regulations, its leadership has been nominating candidates for elections previously. Qasim has been its candidate in the three presidential elections held since JP’s establishment in May 2008.
