Central-Henveiru constituency MP Ali Azim is the only person to have applied for the post of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group leader.
The party announced this on Sunday, while an internal election is scheduled for July 2.
Azim had represented the same constituency in the previous parliament tenure; North-Hithadhoo constituency MP had been the PG leader at the time.
In addition, MDP is to elect two deputy parliamentary group leaders and other party positions on Tuesday including a secretary general and deputy, chief whip and six parliamentary group whips.
Those that have applied for the post of deputy parliamentary group leader are Hulhudhoo constituency MP Ilyas Labeeb and South-Henveiru constituency MP Hussain Shaheem, while Alifushi constituency MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain applied for the post of SG and Central-Fuvahmulah constituency MP for deputy.
Meedhoo constituency MP Rozaina Adam applied for the chief whip post, and seven MPs have expressed interest in the remaining posts.
The main ruling party has 65 representatives, out of 87, in parliament.
