Parliament committee to summon Luthufee and Sofwan

The decision was reached at a committee meeting held on Wednesday

The parliament’s committee on independent institutions has decided to summon Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) President Hassan Luthufee and Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom)’s former Vice President Ismail Sofwan, as they deliberate on the no-confidence motions submitted against them.

The decision was reached at a committee meeting held on Wednesday, with all in attendance voicing support for the committee chair MP Rozaina Adam’s proposal to summon them for questioning.

While the committee had previously passed to remove the two, they had to revise the decision following Luthufee’s resignation.

At the meeting, members noted that committee is yet to be informed of the resignation and that they are waiting for a confirmation from the President’s Office.

Shortly after the committee meeting, MP Rozaina confirmed Broadcom member Sofwan’s resignation via Twitter.

While the committee has passed to summon these two, members of both institutions were summoned to parliament last week; in separate sessions. However, both Luthufee and Sofwan failed to attend.

It is reported that both are currently out of the country; Luthufee’s letter reportedly claims that he is abroad as a family member undergoes medical treatment while Sofwan said that he is required to undergo a long medical procedure.

While they are to be presented to the sub-committee, formed by the committee on independent institutions on Tuesday, MP Rozaina reminded the members to give them adequate time to present themselves.
