Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has stated that it has received five cases regarding abuse of prisoners at Maafushi Prison.

In a press release regarding the recent incidents of violence at Maafushi Prison, HRCM stated that five people called their hotline to talk about the abuse.

HRCM stated that its rapid response team and investigative team began their investigation as soon as they received report of the violence at Maafushi Prison.

HRCM also stated that their investigative report was sent to the parliament on Monday.

The media reported that detainees at Maafushi Prison were pepper sprayed in their cells during an incident of violence on Monday night.

Tensions between correctional officers and detainees at Maafushi Prison escalated after a prisoner injured an officer during a scuffle a few days ago.
