President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has on Monday ratified the bill on presidential commissions.
Announcing this via Twitter, President’s Office spokesperson Ibrahim Hood noted that the act is a “key pledge.” He added that this would empower the commissions to "fulfill their mandates."
Solih had formed two important commissions - Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances and Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery- on his first day in office.
People’s Majlis passed to grant authority to the two commissions last Wednesday; 67 MPs voted in favor while one abstained.
The bill was proposed by Alifushi constituency MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain last week.
It was accepted after three days of deliberations, with a number of lawmakers speaking in its favor.
MP Rasheed had proposed the bill granting authority to the commissions to the 18 parliament as well. Despite being submitted a number of times; it had failed to take a vote on the matter by the time the tenure ended in April.
