The parliament will be looking into the recent scuffle inside Maafushi Prison following an assault of an officer.

The human rights and gender committee has scheduled its meeting for Tuesday at 11am.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Hinnavaru MP and committee president Jeehaan Mahmood said the committee will be holding a meeting on Saturday to deliberate on the matter and later summon the relevant authorities.

Home Ministry stated that undue force was used to control the prison scuffle after a prisoner assaulted an officer.

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) is also investigating the incident.

Some media reported that, officers had taken out five prisoners from their cells, handcuffed and dropped them to the ground before beating them with batons and pepper spraying their groin area. However, the correctional service has denied the claims.
