Maldives must control the number of expatriate workers, says Immigration Controller Mohamed Ahmed Hussain.

He said this via twitter, commending Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed for the comments made regarding the issue at the Maldives Partnership Forum’s session on security.

Noting that the issue “must be controlled,” Hussain said that the Maldives Immigration is working to solve the issue “through numerous hurdles.”

“We can solve this by declaring a work visa limit for nations”

Furthermore, Hussain said that they will be taking an important step in the work to solve the issue “next month.”

He also emphasized that everyone must work together to solve this “at a national level.”

Back in January, Immigration revealed that there is a total of 144,607 expatriate workers in the Maldives, out of which 63,000 are undocumented. However, the actual amount is estimated to be much higher.

In March, it took action against 27 companies for bringing in expatriates unlawfully and neglecting their responsibilities afterwards. It is investigating 67 companies.
