Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the Maldives.
He was greeted at Velana International Airport by Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.
This is PM Modi’s first visit to a foreign country after his re-election this May.
The Maldives' Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that six agreements will be signed between the two countries during his visit, "with the goal of boosting Maldives’ human resources."
Modi will be holding a joint press conference with President Solih at the President’s Office later in the afternoon, where he will inaugurate two projects – the Composite Training Center for the Maldives National Defence Force and the Coastal Surveillance Radar System to monitor and protect Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone.
PM Modi will also be giving an address at the Maldives parliament after the Maghrib prayer on Saturday evening.
He will also be meeting Vice President Faisal Naseem and Maldives’ political leaders including former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, as well as Adhaalth Party leader and Home Minister Imran Abdulla and former President Nasheed (current Parliament Speaker) before concluding his visit on Sunday.
