MET issued a yellow alert over six atolls on Sunday night

Maldives Meteorological Service has revealed that heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected over different regions of the country for a week.

The MET department predicted heavy rain showers and thunderstorms to prevail over central and southern atolls.

Following continued rain showers over some regions of the country on Sunday night, MET office had issued a yellow alert and a white alert separately. The yellow alert was issued from Lhaviyani to Faafu atoll during the late hours of Sunday while the white alert was issued from dawn to morning from Lhaviyani to Thaa atoll on Monday.

The duty forecast at MET revealed that the ongoing severe weather has not yet been declared as the southwest monsoon which falls from June to August.

Capital city Malé experienced hours-long rain showers late Sunday, which caused flooding in some streets. While turbulent weather is upon us again, authorities are yet to provide a solution for the flooding that occurs in Malé as well as outlying atolls even with a little bit of rain.

Some streets of Malé are prone to knee-deep flooding if heavy showers are consistent. Similarly, outlying islands also require a speedy solution for flooding as flood waters often enter households, damaging property.
