President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has formed a Salaries and Wages Advisory Board, on Wednesday.
The board "will advise him on a minimum wage after carrying out broad consultations and research,” revealed Economic Development Minister Fayyaz Ismail, via Twitter. The minister made the request to the president, to form such a board, back in December.
The five-member board will comprise of two representatives each from the industry and the workers, as well as one from the government.
Minister Fayyaz expressed confidence that they can “achieve a fair result,” following the president’s decision.
While the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) plans to propose a minimum wage of MVR 200 per day, to the next parliament, President Solih in his address to mark Labour Day said that establishing a minimum wage for works “is of the utmost importance.”
He later via Twitter, expressed his delight in being able to form the country’s first-ever such body.
The previous administration had created the National Pay Commission in 2016, whose tasks included “setting the salary structure of civil servants.”
