Yameen administration heavily disregarded due processes: MTCC director

The government of former president Abdulla Yameen had heavily disregarded due processes in contracting businesses for various projects, says Hassan Shah, managing director of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

Shah spoke to Raajje Television on Monday, and said that this has been one of the primary reasons for the MTCC’s current financial situation, which he described as disadvantageous.

Shah further said that MTCC under the former government had assigned projects to companies without respect for fairness, and with disregard towards the company’s wellbeing.

The MTCC director also said that many of the development projects launched by the former administration remains incomplete due to this reason.

Shah also said that there have been no signs of MTCC’s conduct being influenced by the current government.

In Monday’s interview, Shah spoke about the Mahaa Jarraafu, a massive dredger used by the company for reclamation projects.

Shah said that a dredger was acquired by the MTCC at the direction of the Yameen administration for the high price of USD 31 million, while similar builds can be acquired for as low as USD 15 million.

Mismanagement of the company’s funds by his predecessors has cost MTCC losses amounting to MVR 80 million, Shah said.
