MP Imthiyaz summoned to Supreme Court

The summon notice was sent while he was at Monday's parliament sitting

North-Maafannu constituency MP Imthiyaz Fahmy has been summoned to the Supreme Court.

As per the summon notice the MP shared on Twitter, he is to present himself to the court at 8:30am on Tuesday. The reason for his summon is noted as “for the Supreme Court’s necessity.”

Noting that the notice was sent while he was at the last sitting of the first session of parliament, Imthiyaz said that “judicial threats cannot stop [them].”

The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) representative has been vocal against the Court’s decision to question former attorney general and chief of the presidential inquiry commission on murders and enforced disappearances, Husnu Suood.

While Suood was questioned last week for statements made to RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee programme regarding the current state of the judiciary, Imthiyaz noted that “this is not a crime.”

Speaking in the same programme on a different day, he described the Supreme Court’s actions as “a threat” to those in the reform work.

Imthiyaz further noted that everyone has the right to a free and fair trial and that the Maldivian people “deserve better.”

The MP added that he will continue his work to ensure this even if it “ruins” him.

Reforming the judiciary is included in MDP’s legislative agenda.
