Government and local authorities have begun a greening project for the recently launched development of an airport in Hoarafushi island of Haa Alif atoll.
The project was officiated at 10:00am on Friday by Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmed Mahloof, in a ceremony attended by members of the island’s local government council and non-government organizations.
10,000 trees are to be planted in the area designated for the airport.
While the project was launched with government assistance, the project will primarily be managed by the island’s council, with involvement from the island community.
Reclamation for the airport’s development was completed earlier in April, after it was inaugurated in March by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The previous government, voted out in November of last year, intended for an airport in the atoll to be developed on Maafinolhu island.
