Mayan 'hopes' for FAM's support regarding FIFA complaint

Mayan’s complaint accuses Sheikh Ahmad of influencing the election to pick Asia’s female representative on FIFA’s governing council

Mariyam ‘Mayan’ Mohamed has said that she hopes Football Association of Maldives (FAM) will support her regarding the complaint she filed at the international football governing body, FIFA.

Mayan’s complaint accuses Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah of Kuwait of influencing the election to pick Asia’s female representative on FIFA’s governing council.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Mayan said that her complaint was not meant to be against FIFA or the AFC and that she filed the complaint as a candidate, since it was the right of every candidate to file complaints 21 days before the election.

She said that there have also been many complaints regarding the AFC Congress, especially due to the Confederation failing to stop interference from Sheikh Ahmad, despite him having already resigned from FIFA’s ruling council over a corruption case in 2017.

Mahfuza Akhter Kiron, who won the Asia’s female representative seat, was arrested via a court order in March, before the election, over a case filed by an individual accusing her of making derogatory remarks against the Bangladeshi prime minister.

Mayan said that many have considered the arrest as a move to gain sympathy votes for Kiron prior to the AFC Congress.

Mayan has served as the Assistant Coach of the Maldives women’s national team and continues to support the country’s female football community.

She has also served at the AFC’s Women’s Committee and as a women’s football development officer at FAM.
