Maldives pres. appoints special envoy to Lanka, following deadly blasts
A wave of bombings across high-end hotels and churches across Sri Lanka this Easter Sunday, have killed at least 150 people and injured over 400

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed a special envoy to Sri Lanka, following a series of coordinated bombings across the country on Sunday morning.

President’s Office spokesperson, Ibrahim Hood confirmed that state minister at the foreign ministry, Ahmed Khaleel has been appointed as the president’s envoy, "to inquire on the condition of Maldivians who may have been affected following the explosions that occurred across Sri Lanka, and to convey solidarity to the Sri Lankan government as this time of national distress."

Khaleel is to depart to Sri Lanka on Sunday evening, and is to meet with senior officials of the Sri Lankan government.

A wave of bombings across high-end hotels and churches across Sri Lanka this Easter Sunday, have killed at least 150 people and injured over 400.

President Solih has condemned the “cowardly act of terror.”

The foreign ministry in a press release highlighted that Maldives “stands shoulder to shoulder with the Government and people of Sri Lanka during this difficult time of national crisis and grief.”

Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo has often been described as the Maldives’ “second biggest city,” due to the high number of Maldivians residing there. The foreign ministry said that it is “closely” monitoring the situation there, and asked Maldivians in need of assistance to reach out to them.
