RaajjeMV has learnt that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to remove Abdulla Jabir as his special envoy.
The newly elected parliament representative for Kaashidhoo constituency was appointed to the post in November 2018.
While RaajjeMV understands that Jabir has been informed of the decision, it is not clear on the date on when he will be officially removed from the position.
The government is yet to disclose any details on the matter.
While Jabir won the Kaashidhoo constituency seat in the parliamentary elections, Article 73 (d, 8) of the Maldives Constitution states that a member of the People's Majlis shall not continue to hold "any other office of the State except an office held by virtue of being a member of the People’s Majlis."
While the newly elected parliament representatives will take oath of office on May 28, Jabir's position as the president's envoy will no longer be valid.
However, RaajjeMV understands that the president plans to remove him prior to this.
The decision comes amid Jabir's growing criticism of the current government, its policies and senior officials. He has indicated plans to submit no-confidence motions against some cabinet ministers, after the 19th parliament begins work.
He is also one of the many that have expressed interest in running for parliament speaker.
Jabir, officially from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), chose to run independently in this year's parliamentary election after losing in the party's internal elections. The party went on to secure 65 seats in the parliament, out of 86.
