Two Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates have won the by-election held by the Elections Commission for the island council of Filladhoo in Haa Alif atoll.
Two candidates from MDP and two from opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) had been up for the vacant seats for which the by-elections were held on Saturday.
The elections were held for the seats as two out of the three members resigned from their positions in the island council.
According to interim results, MDP’s Abdulla Riyaz and Mohamed Shiyad won the seats. Riyaz led the votes with 352 and Shiyad came second with 289 votes.
PPM’s Mohamed Moosa followed with 283 votes and the party’s second candidate Mariyam Zoona came last with 184 votes.
Filladhoo voters registry show that there are 783 eligible voters in the island out of which 571 came out to cast their votes.
The island has a population of 1,118 people.
