Gayoom further squashes rumors of ill feelings towards MDP
On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Maumoon had questioned the credibility of the election by saying that voters had been "influenced"

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has further dismissed reports of hostility between his Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) and main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

In a tweet sent out on Wednesday evening, the former president revealed that he had called MDP’s leader former President Mohamed Nasheed, who won the Central-Mahchangolhi constituency seat, to congratulate him on his party’s “success at the polls.”

While the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) is to announce the official results later on Wednesday night, interim results show MDP securing over 60 out of 87 seats in the election.

“[Nasheed] welcomed my call and we agreed to keep in touch,” reads Gayoom’s tweet.

On Tuesday, reports surfaced that the former president has questioned the credibility of the election.

However, his MRM was quick to deny this, saying that some media outlets were “misconstruing” the former president’s words. MRM added that it “accepts” the results of Saturday’s parliamentary election.

Back on Sunday, Gayoom congratulated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on MDP’s “significant” victory in the election, adding that it will help “deliver his election pledges.”

The former president also noted that MRM “will always stand with the people and support those who work for the good of the nation.”
