Interim results show that MDP has taken the lead with a supermajority

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) is to announce the final results of Saturday’s Parliamentary Elections on Wednesday.

ECM revealed that the finals results of Saturday’s polls will be announced at 09:30pm.

According to the general elections act, ECM must announce the final results within seven days of the election.

ECM will be publicizing results for all 87 constituencies.

212,079 out of the 264,442 had cast their votes in the Parliamentary Elections held on Saturday which is a little over 80 percent voter turnout.

ECM had earlier announced that this is the biggest voter turnout observed in any Parliamentary Elections in Maldives history.

Interim results show that main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leads the votes with a supermajority.

The party had won 65 seats, interim results show.

The opposition, Progressive Party of the Maldives and People’s National Congress won eight constituencies while government coalition partner Jumhooree Party won five.
