Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has said that it accepts the results of Saturday’s parliamentary election.
MRM said this via twitter on Tuesday, dismissing reports that its leader, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had questioned the credibility of the election.
Some local media outlets have reported that Gayoom believes that some individuals had “influenced” voters, adding that he had revealed this during a meeting with campaign teams on Tuesday.
Noting that Gayoom’s words have been “misconstrued,” MRM said that it condemns any such reports.
While MRM is yet to be registered as an official party, it is part of the current ruling coalition.
In Saturday’s parliamentary election, main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party secured over 60 seats. While 20 candidates had contested independently, with Gayoom’s support, only one was able to secure a seat; Abdul Muhsin Hameed for Nilandhoo constituency.
After the election, Gayoom took to twitter to congratulate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the “significant" victory. He added that this will help him deliver his election pledges.
The former president also noted that MRM “will always stand with the people and support those who work for the good of the nation.”
