The Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party, or Labour Party as they are commonly known, has endorsed 10 candidates for Saturday’s parliamentary election.
The 10 candidates include individuals fielded by the government coalition’s Maldivian Democratic Party, Adhaalath Party, Jumhooree Party, opposition People’s National Congress, as well as independent candidates.
The Labour Party says they had met with candidates who requested endorsement, and carried out an evaluation for each of them before a final decision.
The party has endorsed:
- Ahmed Saleem, for Hoarafushi constituency (Maldivian Democratic Party)
- Mohamed Nazim, for Kelaa constituency (non-partisan)
- Ali Hussain, for Kendhoo constituency (Jumhooree Party)
- Mohamed Kaarim, for Naifaru constituency (Maldivian Democratic Party)
- Hussain Husnee, for Dhangethi constituency (non-partisan)
- Aishath Riyaasaa, for Mulaku constituency (Adhaalath Party)
- Abdulla Mohamed, for Madaveli constituency (non-partisan)
- Hassan Khalid, for Fuvahmulah constituency (People’s National Congress)
- Abdul Rahmaan, for Addu-Meedhoo constituency (non-partisan)
- Ismail Majid, for west-Maafannu constituency (non-partisan)
The Labour Party was formed late last year, and was officially inaugurated in January.
The party’s policies focuses primarily on workers’ rights, and supports welfare as well as gender equality in working environments.
The party is fielding candidates for the election as well.
