The Maldives Police Service has said that there have been no reported cases of domestic violence involved Abdul Mughni, who is contesting in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Mughni’s ex-wife has publicly accused him of assaulting her, saying that she ‘suffered abuse and violence for a long time’.
An individual supporting the claim says he ‘and a friend’ had separated Mughni from his ex-wife during a violent encounter, and filed a case with the police.
This contradicts police’s letter to Mughni, which says that the Maldives Police Service has not received any cases of domestic violence involved the parliamentary candidate.
Following mounting pressure online, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) disavowed Mughni’s campaign, and said they will no longer be supporting his bid for a parliament seat.
However, Mughni is legally entitled to continue his campaign under the party’s banner and has refused to withdraw his candidacy.
Mughni has denounced the allegation as completely false, and an attempt to slander him, and criticised MDP for arbitrarily withdrawing support for his campaign.
MDP’s branch in Thinadhoo has rallied behind Mughni, and his supporters have defended him heavily on social media.
