Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said that people are placed in prison to change them into productive members of society, and not to punish them.

Inaugurating the ‘Smart Campus: Digital Classroom’ programme in Maafushi Prison on Sunday, the Minister said that the justice system needs to allow prisoners to re-enter society easily.

Minister Imran said the government and civil society will establish a system in which prisoners can be rehabilitated and re-enter society instead of being punished.

The correctional service has begun training programmes to help rehabilitate convicts, including providing them educational courses approved by the Maldives Qualification Authority.

Ooredoo’s Smart Campus is a collaborative web conferencing environment enabling users to communicate in real-time using video and audio or through text chat, and to share presentations, documents and images on an interactive whiteboard.
