MDP leader criticises JP-Progressive alliance
Nasheed said that the alliance will not yield much result

Former President Mohamed Nasheed, leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has criticised coalition partner Jumhooree Party’s alliance with the opposition.

Speaking at a campaign event for the MDP on Thursday night, Nasheed said that the alliance will not yield much political result.

In this regard Nasheed said that candidates endorsed by the Jumhooree Party and the Progressive Coalition will likely ‘not even secure six good seats’.

Nasheed said that disagreements between Jumhooree Party and the Progressive Coalition is inevitable, and will arise soon.

Although, Jumhooree Party remains in the ruling coalition, the party has decided not to work with MDP in the upcoming parliamentary election.

Party leader Qasim Ibrahim made this decision after MDP decided to field candidates to all but one of 87 constituencies in the election, slated for April 6th.

Speaking at Thursday’s event, Nasheed again refuted the party’s allegation of MDP violating its commitment to agreements made to its coalition partners.

Nasheed said that the government has honoured its agreement to Jumhooree Party and allocated positions in government for its members, but this does not extend to elected positions such as that of parliament seats.
