Alhan Fahmy, a candidate of the government coalition’s Jumhooree Party for the upcoming parliamentary elections, has been summoned for questioning by the state corruption watchdog.
Alhan himself revealed this, through a post on his Twitter account, where he attached a copy of the summon paper.
The paper says Alhan has been summoned for 15:00 on 14th March, over his funding of a sports competition in the constituency he is contending for.
Campaign funding laws bar candidates from spending any more than MVR 2,000 for every constituent capable of voting.
Any gifts to an individual or organisation as part of the campaign is prohibited as well.
Alhan has defended his actions and maintains that the competition is a community empowerment event, not a political one.
