Education Minister Aishath Ali has said they are discussing a policy to begin teaching students of grade one to three at state-run primary schools in the Dhivehi Language.
In an interview to the state media on Monday night, Minister Aishath said that this policy has been forwarded for discussion by the cabinet.
Minister Aishath said another policy to teach a 'social studies' syllabus in Dhivehi for all grades has also been proposed and forwarded for discussion.
Primary education is mandatory in the Maldives and is provided by state-run schools in the capital and other atolls; 87,000 students were taught at these schools in 2017.
The current administration, which took office in November last year, has separated the Ministry of Education, and higher education, with a total budget of MVR 3.4 billion earmarked this year for public education.
