The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has on Wednesday asked local government councils of islands affected by recent heavy rain in the southern atolls to provide damage assessment reports.
The NDMA told a press conference that it asks all councils to do the same, and provide assessments within 48 hours.
Umar Moosa Fikuree, deputy chief executive at NDMA, said that it is ‘vital’ that this information is reported and accounted for by the state.
Fikuree said that this information will be used in the state’s ongoing development projects, so as to ensure that infrastructural steps are taken to tackle affects of turbulent weather.
Coasts along local islands are heavily subject to erosion and island roads are often flooded during heavy rain.
