Two days after his arrest, former President Abdulla Yameen has been taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for medical care.
Criminal Court on Monday ordered to keep Yameen in remand until the trial into money laundering allegations conclude.
While he is being kept at Maafushi Prison, he was brought to capital Malé City for treatment on Wednesday evening.
Following his arrival at the hospital, his supporters gathered inside. Police officers attempted to disperse the crowd by pepper spraying them.
The Prosecutor General (PG) Office had asked the Court to keep him remanded until a verdict is reached, accusing him of offering bribes to witnesses to get them to alter or retract their statements to authorities.
Yameen is accused of being involved in the biggest corruption scandal in the country’s history, and was questioned by police twice since his defeat in last year’s presidential elections.
While Yameen questioned the delay in raising charges against him at Monday’s hearing, the state prosecutor noted that he had used his power to block any investigation into the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement.
Police is also seeking an additional charge against the country’s former leader, for providing false statements to the anti-corruption watchdog during the investigation.
