President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has questioned the delay in publicizing the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)’s report on the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)’s embezzlement, compiled in 2017.
The report was released on Thursday morning.
Speaking at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) event on Thursday night, President Solih questioned on why the report was publicized now, a day after his government launched a zero-tolerance campaign against corruption.
He further questioned why the report had been “hidden,” despite the investigation concluding over three years ago.
The president further added that his administration will do “whatever is necessary” in its fight against corruption, and called on the anti-corruption watchdog to expedite the investigations against those implicated in its report.
While two government officials are included in the Commission’s list, President Solih has told them to stay home until the matter is resolved.
Speaking at the event to launch the ‘Zero Tolerance to Corruption Campaign’ on Wednesday, Solih assured the public that his administration “will not tolerate corruption at any level.”
His predecessor, former President Abdulla Yameen had faced multiple corruption allegations during his five-year tenure, and is also implicated in the MMPRC scandal.
