Maldives parliament, or the People's Majlis, is yet to schedule its first sitting of the year.
Parliament’s inaugural session was held last Thursday, where President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih delivered his first presidential address since assuming office in November 2018.
While this will be the parliament’s last session before April’s elections, its media director Hassan Ziyau told RaajjeMV that a date for the first sitting is yet to be scheduled.
The parliament building is currently undergoing renovation work, and Ziyau said that he expects the sitting to be scheduled after the work is completed.
Last year’s sessions concluded with several bills pending, including some proposed by the president himself.
President Solih had, during the presidential address, asked to expedite these bills.
According to the Maldives constitution, “there shall be at least three sessions every year,” and the first session should continue till April.
The next parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 6.
