Gayoom seeks to make Maldives Reform Movement official
Form was submitted on Sunday morning
Decision to form the party was announced on 31st January
This is the third political party to be formed under Gayoom's leadership

Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) the breakaway faction of opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and government coalition partner, has on Sunday officially submitted the application requesting to form a new party under the name “Maldives Reform Movement” (MRM).

While this is the third political party being formed under Gayoom’s leadership, the form was submitted to the Elections Commission (EC) on Sunday.

The former President had initially announced his decision to form a new political party at a press conference on the 31st of January.

The first political party formed under Gayoom’s leadership was Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) back during his tenure. Following disputes within the party, Gayoom left DRP and began work to form his second political party, now opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM). Gayoom was stripped from his position as party leader following a dispute with his half-brother and then President Abdulla Yameen, following which his supporters broke away from PPM, forming the Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM).

While the application has been submitted to form Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), senior officials of the ruling coalition partner reported that they will be fielding 32 candidates in the Parliamentary Election scheduled for 6th April.
