Authorities have on Saturday held another iteration of the government ‘Saafu Raajje’ (Clean Maldives) cleanup initiative in Villimalé, an island extension to capital city Malé.

Saturday’s event was inaugurated by vice president Faisal Naseem and carried out by members of the Malé City Council and staff from the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).

WAMCO director said on Saturday that the corporation has supplied cleaning equipment and that the island’s roads, beach, and streets were entirely cleaned.

WAMCO also said that more cleanups will be held under the program, and that ‘Clean Maldives will discourage the use of single-use plastic.

The ‘Clean Maldives’ campaign was relaunched on 7th December, by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, before a cleanup where him, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and cabinet ministers had participated.

The program was part of President Solih’s pledges for his first 30 days in office; during this time, the government launched a national campaign to reduce plastic bags and plastic bottles. The President’s Office and several ministerial offices have stopped using single-use plastic.
