Maldives Police Service (MPS) is investigating the assault on an elderly man in Addu City Hithadhoo, reveals Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed.

A video circulating on social media shows an elderly man being assaulted by a middle-aged man inside a café in Hithadhoo. The video shows the middle-aged man verbally abuse the elderly man, going on to push him and spit on his face.

The man who publicized the video in question, wrote that the elderly man is believed to be mentally unstable.

The video sparked public outrage, with hordes of social media users calling on authorities to arrest the man, seen assaulting the elderly man, immediately.

It is notable that while the man was being assaulted, there were other men at the table, sitting and watching.

While many users had tagged Commissioner Hameed on the twitter post, mere hours later he had announced via a comment that the incident is being investigated by the Addu City Police.
